Art of Khayameya: Publication

Khayamiya, a craft that was born in Cairo and to this day still exists, is now hanging by a thread and threatened to die. It was the craft of tent-making and pavilions and now serve as decorative pieces. The low demand and the unawareness of the people are what threaten the craft, but the craftsmen continue making their beautiful pieces and have hope that the art of Khayamiya will rise again. This projects aims to explore Khayamiya and shed light on it with a new perspective to make viewers fall in love with the craft and understand its multi-layered discipline. The outcome pushes the viewer to see through the craft and find beauty in all its aspects, and see it from the eyes of the artisan who sews the needle with meticulous detailing and channeled years of practice, experience, and inspiration into his work.

The concept of the publication is highlighting the ‘Beauty in what is hidden’, which is the title of the publication, and all elements of the publication follow this concept. It has french folds with poem verses created alongside the craftsmen. In addition, both the cover and back are hand-made on the tent-makers’ fabric called ‘Dak’. The publication discusses the current state of the craft and gives insight on the stories and lives and heritage of artisans.
